Shear Stresses in Beams

Learner should have completed First year of Eeering/Diploma in Civil or Mechanical branchBe able to resolve forces and apply the basic equilibrium equations in 2 dimensional cases.

This course is part of the topic Bending of beams in Mechanics of solids. As a consequence of bending, flexural shear stresses are induced in addition to flexural or bending stresses. This course is about the first kind of stresses i.e., Flexural Shear stresses or simply shear stresses. In this course the learner will understand the fundamental concept of the how shear stresses are induced and be introduced to the general equation of the shear stress; called "The shear formula". Also covered in this course is how the shear stresses vary across the depth of a cross section. Rectangular, I, circular and triangular sections have been discussed and general expressions for the variation of shear stresses across these geometries has also been discussed in detail. At the end there are two lectures in which problems have been solved to apply these equations in real case examples. A lecture is also included which summarises all the formulae pertaining to shear stresses in sections of general shape.

The course is for students of Civil Eeering at the under graduate and graduate levels, as well as those who may be preparing for competitive exams, or just interested to enhance their understanding of the behaviour of beams due to bending.

Who this course is for:Diploma in Civil Eeering, Civil Eeering students, Civil or Structural Eeers
